El Caballo Blanco

Pete and I had a great Waitangi weekend in Auckland watching El Caballo Blanco at the Vector Arena. The show (originally established in Perth in 1971) was a celebration of the beauty, majesty and intelligence of the Spanish horse, showcasing Andalusians, Lipizzaners and Friesians. We saw a combination of intricate dressage movements (traditionally used in the battlefield), formation riding and liberty work accompanied by Spansih dance and song. My favourite part of the show was a ‘dance off’ between a beautiful Flamenco dancer and star of the show, Friesian horse, Apollo. We paricularly liked the fact that Rene Gasser took the time to show us how he teaches movements such as Piaffe and the Spanish Walk, using horses at various stages of their training to demonstrate. The horses rearing and walking on their hind legs was also particularly impressive.

However, parts of the show made us smile as we do many of the same things with our own wonderful horses (such as the ‘lye down’ and liberty work). We were inspired to continue with our own training and work towards presenting a show of our own, showcasing what can be achieved with a horse when you have the time, patience and relationship. Watch this space for Trinity Valley Farms first show extravaganza!

World Cup Show Jumping

Some of you may have been to the World Cup Show Jumping held at the Tauranga Racecourse over Waitangi weekend. If you did, you would have seen some amazing riding over some VERY high jumps and some beautiful and talented horses. The World Cup was won by Katie McVean, originally from Cambridge. Pete trained with Katie’s dad Jeff McVean for six years and remembers a seven year old Katie McVean!

Do you feel inspired?

If any of you feel inspired to compete in a horse show after reading about these great events, please let us know. There are local Western, Dressage, Show Jumping, Show Hunter, Eventing and Cross Country shows and some Ribbon Days coming up. If you are intersted in giving any of these a go please contact Amy on 07 5715906 or 027 7693910 and let her know.

P.S. All lessons commence this week. Look forward to seeing you.
